Does Obesity Affect the Heels?

Recent research has shown that patients who experience obesity may often develop foot conditions such as chronic plantar fasciitis, an altered foot structure, or ailments, which may affect the overall function of the foot. The additional weight the feet must endure may disturb the shape of the arch, and in some cases, may cause the arch to disappear completely. Studies have shown there may be a link between increased obesity, and the level of pain that radiates in the heel. Additionally, chronic heel and foot pain may be a contributing factor for the lack of motivation to perform specific exercises that are necessary for effective weight loss. It’s suggested to schedule a consultation with a podiatrist for additional information about foot ailments associated with obesity.

Obesity has become very problematic at this point in time and can have extremely negative effects on the feet. Obesity and Your Feet

Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling. Being overweight is one of the main contributors to foot complications.

Problems & Complications

Extra Weight – Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet. As your weight increases, your balance and body will shift, creating new stresses on your feet. This uneven weight distribution can cause pain, even while doing the simplest tasks, such as walking.

Diabetes – People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has a drastic impact on the health of your feet. As you get older, your diabetes might worsen, which could lead to loss of feeling in your feet, sores, and bruises. You could also become more prone to various infections.

Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue that forms along the bottom of the foot.

What is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that affects the joints and it is caused by an excess amount of uric acid in the bloodstream. A study was done to determine how gout is related to heart attacks, and it was found that the average time period between a diagnosis of gout and myocardial infarction was 2.3 years. Gout has also been shown to increase this risk of getting a heart attack by three times. Surprisingly, gout was also shown to be a higher risk factor for myocardial infarction when other factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart failure were absent. If you have any questions or think you may have gout, please consider scheduling a consultation with a podiatrist.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Many women often experience swollen feet and ankles during their pregnancy. This is commonly referred to as edema. Generally, the swelling is a result of the excess fluid in the body caused by the developing fetus and may become severe during the third trimester. There are several ways to reduce any swelling that may develop in the feet and ankles, including stretching the legs as often as possible, elevating the feet, and limiting standing for extended periods of time. Research has shown that it may be beneficial to lie on the left side while sleeping in addition to consuming plenty of fresh water, which may help to avoid dehydration. It's suggested to speak with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have regarding any severe swelling in your feet.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

Can Ingrown Toenails Become Infected?

An ingrown toenail can become infected if treatment is not started as soon as possible. It may lead to open sores on the foot, loss of blood flow and tissue decay. This condition typically develops when the corners of the toenail cut into the surrounding skin, causing discomfort and pain. Research has shown trimming the toenails straight across may prevent ingrown toenails from forming. Additionally, wearing shoes and socks that fit properly and cutting the nails to a proper length may aid in the prevention of developing this condition. Soaking the toe in warm water frequently during the day will help the toe feel more comfortable and relief may be noticed in a few weeks. For serious toenail infections, surgery may be an option which generally consists of a partial removal of the nail. A consultation with a podiatrist is suggested if you are afflicted with this condition, and would like additional information about how to properly treat ingrown toenails.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact one of our podiatrists of Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Debary, Lake Mary, Orlando, and Oviedo, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
