Types of Stretches

The sport of running or jogging can be more enjoyable when the muscles are properly stretched. Many runners practice static stretching, which enables the muscles and tendons to become more flexible. However, research has shown this type of stretch may inhibit nerve contraction, which may have a negative impact on how fast you can run. It may be more advantageous to perform stretches than can increase the range of motion before embarking on a run. Additionally, it is important to stretch the calves after a run is completed, as this may help to loosen any tight muscles. If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of stretching the feet before and after running, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

Why Stretching Is Important for Your Feet

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with one of our podiatrists from Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first to determine if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous exercise, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising to ice and rest the foot. It is advised that you then see a podiatrist for help.

The symptoms that often accompany this condition can consist of swelling in the heel and surrounding areas, and it may be painful to walk. This ailment can be caused by obesity, shoes that do not fit correctly, or medical conditions such as arthritis. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

The feet are the foundation of the body, so it’s important to make sure your child’s feet are healthy and well cared for to prepare them for supporting the body as they age. One way of helping your child’s feet gain strength is to allow for proper movement. As they begin to kick and crawl, they are working the muscles in their feet, so supporting this motion will only help them to become stronger. To allow for proper movement, it is also recommended to avoid dressing your child in tightly fitted booties, that way their feet and toes may develop naturally and move freely. Since babies grow quickly, it’s important that you update their footwear to avoid tightly fitted shoes or socks that may cause poor circulation. Washing and thoroughly drying their feet will also help to maintain proper hygiene. For more tips on how to keep your child’s feet healthy, we recommend you consult with a podiatrist for professional care and advice.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Possible Causes of Blisters

An uncomfortable condition on your feet as a result of excessive friction may be referred to as a blister. It appears as a small area that is filled with fluid, which forms as the body’s natural defense to protect the damaged skin. Blisters on the feet are generally caused by wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, or from having excessively sweaty feet. It may be beneficial to protect the blister as daily activities are accomplished. This can be achieved by putting a bandage over the affected area, until it drains on its own when new skin has formed. If you get frequent blisters and would like advice on how to prevent them, please consult with a podiatrist.

Blisters are prone to making everyday activities extremely uncomfortable. If your feet are hurting, contact one of our podiatrists of Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.
