How Aging Affects Gait in Seniors

As people age, natural changes in gait can affect mobility and stability. Reduced calf muscle strength often leads to taking shorter steps, while balance issues may increase the period in the walking cycle when both feet are on the ground simultaneously. In younger adults, this phase typically makes up about 18 percent of the cycle, but it may increase to 26 percent or higher as people age or experience balance challenges. This added time on both feet offers greater stability, helping to lower fall risk. Joint changes, like reduced ankle flexibility, may further impact stride length. To maintain balance, older adults might shift their weight or adopt postural changes, leading to a wider stance and a less fluid movement. Neurological changes can make coordinating each step more difficult, slowing pace and reducing synchrony in body movement. A podiatrist can assess specific gait challenges in seniors and suggest exercises or custom orthotics to restore stability and improve gait mechanics. If you have trouble walking while carrying out daily activities, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a gait analysis, exam, and treatment options.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

All About Fungal Toenail Infections

Fungal toenail infections are common and can affect anyone, especially those frequently exposed to warm, moist environments. Toenail infections often start subtly but can progress to cause noticeable changes in the toenail, including discoloration, thickening, and brittleness. Infected nails may turn yellow, green, or even black, and as they thicken, they may become challenging to trim. Patients might also experience discomfort, particularly when pressure is applied to the affected area. Fungi that cause the infection thrive in communal areas like showers, locker rooms, and gyms, where people are more likely to walk barefoot. Certain conditions, such as diabetes, a weakened immune system, or poor circulation, can increase susceptibility. A podiatrist can evaluate the severity of a fungal toenail infection and recommend effective treatment options, which may include topical or oral antifungal medications. If your toenails have been infected, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and treatment.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

When Cracked Heels Are Beyond Unsightly

Cracked heels occur when the skin on the heels becomes dry and thick, leading to fissures or splits. This condition is often caused by prolonged standing, wearing open-backed shoes, or dry weather. Other contributing factors include obesity, which increases pressure on the heel pad, and skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. While cracked heels may seem like just a cosmetic issue, they can become more serious if left untreated. Deep fissures can cause pain, bleeding, and increase the risk of infection, especially if dirt or bacteria enter the cracks. For individuals with diabetes or circulation problems, cracked heels can lead to complications, including ulcers. If you have cracked heels that become painful, or show signs of infection, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for treatment.

If the skin on your feet starts to crack, you may want to see a podiatrist to find treatment. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists from Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Cracked Heels

It is important to moisturize your cracked heels in order to prevent pain, bleeding, and infection. The reason cracked heels form is because the skin on the foot is too dry to support the immense pressure placed on them. When the foot expands, the dry skin on the foot begins to split.

Ways to Help Heal Them

  • Invest in a good foot cream
  • Try Using Petroleum Jelly
  • Ease up on Soaps
  • Drink Plenty of Water

Ways to Prevent Cracked Heels

  • Moisturize After Showering
  • Skip a Shower
  • Keep Shower Water Lukewarm
  • Don’t Scrub Your Feet

If you are unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels, seek guidance from a podiatrist. Your doctor will help you with any questions or information you may need.
